Silent, smooth, luxurious—and truly sustainable—this is the reality made possible by Candela’s electric hydrofoil vessels. Perfectly suited for waterborne transport in the Maldives, they offer operators a strikingly efficient and cost-effective solution.
The Maldives is a global leader in addressing climate change, taking bold actions to safeguard its environment while facing the unique challenges of being an island nation. Among these challenges, the country’s reliance on fossil fuel waterborne transport presents its greatest environmental hurdle.
Swedish technology company Candela will present a groundbreaking solution at the Maldives Marine Expo 2025, held from February 4 to 9, 2025. With its efficient electric hydrofoil vessels, Candela offers a cutting-edge alternative that drastically reduces emissions, operational costs, and underwater noise pollution – while providing a more refined, and better, passenger experience.
Unlike conventional boats, Candela’s P-12 electric hydrofoil ferries fly above the water on computer-guided hydrofoils, reducing energy usage by 80%. This groundbreaking innovation makes electric propulsion viable for long-range, high-speed travel at 25 knots, all without emissions or noise.
"Flying above the waves provides a superior, luxurious experience—smooth, silent, and truly revolutionary," says Björn Antonsson, Regional CEO of Candela APAC.
This state-of-the-art ferry is stabilized in real time by its advanced flight controller, eliminating the pitching and rolling typically associated with boat travel. Instead of feeling every wave, passengers float three feet above the choppy water, cocooned in a quiet, air-conditioned cabin.
For operators, the benefits extend beyond sustainability. With the elimination of fuel costs, minimal maintenance requirements on the C-POD electric motor, and drastically lower energy consumption, Candela’s hydrofoils offer superior operational expenditure (OPEX) compared to traditional diesel-powered or gasoline vessels.
Candela’s hydrofoils also offer environmental benefits crucial for protecting the Maldives’ delicate coral reefs. Unlike traditional boats, hydrofoils generate no wake and create virtually no underwater noise.
In Stockholm, Candela's P-12 has already become a cutting-edge part of the transportation system, serving as an attraction appreciated by both tourists and commuters alike.
Visitors to Candela Booth S49 at the Maldives Marine Expo 2025 will have the opportunity to explore how Candela’s hydrofoil technology works, understand its economic and environmental benefits, and discuss real-world applications tailored to the Maldives.
“The Maldives has a unique opportunity to lead the world in sustainable marine transport. Our hydrofoils not only provide a new level of luxurious passenger experience but also offer significant cost savings for operators while eliminating emissions. It’s a winwin. We are excited to explore how this technology can be tailored to meet the specific needs of this the Maldives,” says Björn Antonsson, Head of Candela APAC.
