Regarded as one of the best destinations for diving by Lonely Planet, Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon, is a tropical sanctuary where greenery meets the open waters, that offers a rare blend of serenity and adventure, surrounded by vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life that promises an unforgettable encounter with nature’s finest. But as global threats like climate change, overfishing, and pollution endanger marine ecosystems worldwide, the Maldives faces a growing responsibility to protect its fragile underwater environments.

Recognising this, Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon has taken a proactive step in environmental stewardship by opening a dedicated Marine Biology Unit to champion marine conservation and inspire a sense of shared responsibility among guests, staff, and the surrounding community.

The Marine Biology Unit, previously the resort’s library, has been transformed into an educational hub that fosters sustainable tourism and ecological awareness. The unit is led by Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’s first and only female marine biologist, bringing a unique and empowering perspective to marine conservation efforts at the resort. It serves as a dynamic space where guests can learn about the complexities of marine life, from coral health to the behaviour of local fish species.

Each day, guests can engage with educational content through talks that introduce them to the intricate web of ocean ecosystems. The topics vary from the wonders of coral reefs to the fascinating behaviours of the region’s marine life. To encourage exploration, the unit displays the day’s topic outside its doors, sparking curiosity and inviting guests to learn more. Fish identification checklists are also provided, helping guests deepen their understanding as they venture into Ellaidhoo’s thriving reefs.

Commenting on this milestone, Sanjeeva Perera, General Manager of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, said, “The launch of our Marine Biology Unit is the realization of a long-awaited dream and a meaningful contribution to our ESG initiatives. Our mission is to empower guests and staff to become true stewards of the ocean, fostering a deep respect for marine life that will resonate long after their stay at Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon. We hope this initiative not only enriches their experience but also builds a foundation of environmental responsibility that extends to the wider community.”

Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon has long championed eco-friendly practices, recognising the vital role they play in preserving the island’s unparalleled natural beauty. By engaging guests as partners in environmental protection, Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon aspires to make a lasting, positive impact, fostering a shared sense of responsibility that will preserve the island’s pristine marine environment for generations to come.
