The Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation (MMRC) has disclosed a new tourism strategy for the year 2020.

According to the strategy, promoting the rich culture of the destination in addition to developing niche markets such as MICE, culture and sports tourism are to be the main focus for 2020.

Although Maldives is traditionally known as a popular destination for honeymooners with its high-end resort accommodations, MMPRC will work to promote the diverse variety of activities available to tourists including beach volleyball, badminton and surfing in the coming year.

Moreover, local tourism will be promoted through marketing activities showcasing the rich local culture of the inhabited islands in Maldives. It will be centered around cultural tourism with the aim of introducing the Maldivian life through local cuisine, cultural performances, traditional handicrafts and heritage sites.

For the improvement of MICE tourism, hotels and resorts with infrastructure for events and conferences are encouraged to expand its growth to draw in special groups interested in culture, sports, and business activities.

The plan is to be executed with holding events such as, trade roadshows, media familiarization trips, and  joint marketing campaigns with airlines and trade partners.

The Maldives has recently welcomed 1.5 million international tourists for the year 2019. It is expected that this milestone will reach 2 million in the upcoming year.
