Local Chef Mariyam Shiuna Endorsed as a Continental Judge by World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS)

In recent years, Maldives rapidly advances in the culinary industry and has established a national-level association for the first time. Furthermore, in 2022, contributions to the culinary industry sector were recognized at the national awards of various levels. 

The Chefs Guild of Maldives (CGM) played a pinnacle part in the industry's rapid growth. Since their establishment in 2014, the association has extended its respect and recognition to include everyone taking part in the culinary industry beyond the chefs working in the kitchen.

CGM has persevered to find advancement opportunities for local chefs and those newly joining the industry. As part of this endeavor, CGM has sought official membership in the leading global chefs’ association, the World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS). 

In addition, locals have the opportunity to take part and achieve prestigious awards in international culinary competitions and challenges. 

Most recently, local chef, Mariyam Shiuna was endorsed for the license of a Continental Judge by the leading global chefs’ association, the World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS). Shiuna is the fourth local chef and the second female to have received the Continental Judge license from the country. 

Local chefs; Abdulla Sabah, Ishaq Solih and Aminath Shaanee became the first licensed Continental Judges through the offer extended to CGM in 2017. Shiuna was initially in the lineup to undergo training with them as the opportunity was opened for two male and two female chefs.

However, due to personal circumstances, she had unfortunately refrained from participating. Today, she has finally emerged as a Continental Judge and with her lies vast experience as a contributor to the culinary sector of the Maldives as an educator, judge and mentor to the new emerging generation of chefs. 

She has worked with internationally renowned chefs in various global culinary festivals, MasterChef programs and local television programs, further affirming her growth and influence in the industry. 

On her new achievement, Shiuna expresses gratitude towards her family, husband, and CGM family, especially CGM President, Mariyam Noordeen and former Dean of the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism, Dr. Zeenaz Hussain, MNU and The Hawks for their support and contributions that helped shape her career.
