The new seaplane terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA), Noovilu , has bagged the Global Best Projects Awards for Merit Airport/Port of Engineering News Record (ENR) for 2022.

ENR is the world's most influential academic journal in engineering and construction. The ENR Global Best Projects Awards are known as the 'Oscars' of the engineering industry and recognise some of the world's most powerful engineering projects globally.

The Noovilu Seaplane Terminal received the award in the Merit of Airport/Port category. ENR Global Best Projects has recognised MACL's efforts to overcome travel barriers, labour shortages and supply chain disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic and build the facility on time. Efforts have also been made to establish processes within the building to meet the environmental needs of the country, reduce the impact on surrounding reefs and sea floor, and minimize the damage to marine life.

The Noovilu seaplane terminal is the world's largest seaplane terminal. The terminal, which officially came into use on October 6, has a floating dock area with more than 55 seaplane spaces. The 28,000-square-metre terminal has been built on four floors, with spacious lounges, boarding gates, a duty-free shop and operational spaces.
