29 islands to be developed for Maldives tourism

29 islands have been announced to be leased for further development to promote Maldives as a tourist destination.

The names of the islands were announced by the Tourism Minister, Ali Waheed during a ceremony called 'Burabi' held at Dharubaaruge on the evening of December 17. 

Areas of local inhabited islands are also included in the list to be leased for the development of tourism, they are:
Addu City, Fuvahmulah, GDh. Vaadhoo, L. Gan, HDh. Nolhivaranfaru, HA. Kelaa, and HA, Uligan.

Addressing at the ceremony, Minister Waheed said that the opinions of the locals were taken into consideration while choosing the islands of a specific atoll as to not cause any harm to the surrounding environment. Furthermore, these matters were discussed with other authorities of the government and the details of the islands to be leased will be released very soon, informs the Minister.

Minister further expressed that, over the first 6 months of 2020, it is expected that the bidding process will be completed and the development work will start as well. "Our target is to employ local residents at the developed islands with completion". 

The 29 islands to be developed include:

  • HA. Dhapparu
  • HA. Medhufushi
  • HA. Alidhuffarufinolhu
  • HDh. Hon'daidhoo
  • HDh. Kudafarufasgandu
  • HDh. Vaikaramuraidhoo
  • Sh. Nalandhoo
  • Sh. Kudalhaimendhoo
  • Sh. Fushifaru
  • N. Kunnamalei
  • R. Ehthigili
  • R. Alifushi
  • M. Seedheehuraa
  • M. Boahuraa
  • F. En'bulufushi
  • F. Jinnathugau
  • Th. Kaaddoo
  • Th. Kanimeedhoo
  • Th. Olhufushi
  • L.  Kashidhoo
  • L. Dhonberahaa
  • L. Bodu mungnafushi
