Maldives Welcomes Over 92,000 Tourists in January 2021

Maldives has recorded 92,103 tourist arrivals to during the month January 2021. 

According to the latest statistics report released by the Ministry of Tourism, Maldives recorded an average daily number of 2,971 tourists in January. This was a 47% decrease in arrivals compared with the 173,874 tourists recorded in January 2020. 

In the absence of China, one of the key markets to Maldives prior to pandemic, Russia and India now occupies the top market ranks with 20,973 and 19,135 arrivals recorded in January 2021. Ukraine and Kazakhstan follow behind with 7,210 and 4,434 tourists, respectively. Romania, France and Germany are also included in the top 10 markets to Maldives this January with over 3,300 tourists from each market.  

The Ministry’s report also noted that 144 resorts/marinas are currently in operation, while 324 guesthouses have resumed operations across 15 atolls.  

Maldives commenced the year 2021 with focus on new strategies that have been adopted to ensure the goals of achieving pre- pandemic arrival. In this regard, several marketing activities are already in the pipeline such as joint promotions with tour operators and airlines, participation in key travel trade fairs, roadshows and familiarization trips targeted to media, influencers and celebrities to promote the destination in various markets. Besides these activities' prominence would be given to digital, social media and virtual activities to maintain the destination presence and promote Maldives as the most preferred destination across the globe.   

By the end of 2020, Maldives celebrated the remarkable achievement of receiving 500,000 tourists amidst an ongoing pandemic. Currently, the Russian market is one of the top performing markets according to the latest statistics by the Ministry of Tourism. India and Middle Eastern markets are also showing steady growth in terms of arrivals. While China has been one of the traditionally strongest markets in terms of arrivals to Maldives prior to the pandemic, several marketing efforts are still underway to maintain the presence in the Chinese market as it opens for outbound travel again.
