Minister Waheed participates in the 3rd virtual meeting of UNWTO Global Tourism Crisis Committee

On April 16, Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed has participated in the 3rd virtual meeting of World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Global Tourism Crisis Committee.

 

Initially, Minister Waheed became part of the Global Crisis Committee as the chair of UNWTOs South Asia Regional Commission upon invitation by the UNWTOs Secretary General. 

 

Minister had previously said, "We encourage the private sector, the international community and fellow citizens of the world to help each other, work together in solidarity and stay positive at these challenging times to defeat the virus". He further declared that "Maldives will beat COVID-19 with support from the rest of the world".

 

The UNWTO-led committee holds regular virtual meetings, reflecting the need for coordinated and efficient action by the private and public sectors, governments, international financing institutions, and the United Nations to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism industry.

 

The crisis committee was formed during a high-level virtual meeting held by UNWTO on 19th March 2020, which brought together key UN agencies, the chairs of its Executive Council and Regional Commissions, and private sector leaders.


Currently, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed 7 cases tested positive for COVID-19 in Capital Male'.  With the discovery of first local case in Male' City, HPA announced red alert on capital region and a 24hour lockdown was implemented on Male' City which later extended to 14 days as the number of local transmission cases reached 7.
