On April 11, 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Maldivian Government to transform Kadhdhoo Airport into an international hub. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu oversaw the signing during his visit to Fonadhoo in Laamu Atoll.

The ceremony marked the commencement of crucial activities such as land reclamation and coastal protection, essential for Kadhdhoo Airport's redevelopment. Additionally, the event marked the launch of the Laamu Maritime Hub Development project.

Signed between the Maldivian Government and China CAMC Engineering Co. Ltd., the MoU outlines plans for Kadhdhoo Airport's expansion. Minister for Construction and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib represented the Maldivian Government, while General Manager, Li Weiwei signed on behalf of China CAMC Engineering Co. The redevelopment project aims to extend the airport's runway to 2.45 kilometers and construct a terminal capable of handling 300 passengers during peak hours. It also involves reclaiming 56.60 hectares of land and constructing 4433 meters of revetment for coastal protection.

Simultaneously, the Laamu Integrated Maritime Hub was inaugurated during the ceremony. Awarded to China CAMC Engineering Co.
