Mark Eletr, General Manager of Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives, recently celebrated his third anniversary with the resort, marking notable milestones in his tenure. Since joining in November 2021, Mark, an experienced hotelier, has spearheaded a variety of projects and initiatives, demonstrating his commitment to innovation, sustainability, and team development.

One of his key accomplishments was the launch of Surf Corner, a dedicated area for surfers that has become particularly popular during the surfing season. The spot has even gained attention from celebrity performers, such as Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Kate Ceberano, Xavier Rudd, and Delta Goodrem, who have visited the resort for impromptu musical performances. Mark is excited about the upcoming year, with major acts like Missy Higgins and Birds of Tokyo already lined up for 2025.

In addition to entertainment, Mark has focused on improving the resort’s infrastructure. He oversaw the construction of new staff accommodation, set to provide 44 units, which will be equipped with solar panels to support sustainability goals. Mark has also been heavily involved in property maintenance, addressing the challenges posed by the harsh Maldivian climate.

Sustainability has been a major focus of Mark’s leadership. One of his standout initiatives was the introduction of Frond Circles, where fallen palm tree fronds are arranged in circular formations to decompose into compost, reducing waste and eliminating the need for diesel-powered waste transport. This has not only helped regenerate the island’s gardens but has also contributed to a more sustainable, circular economy on the island. Furthermore, Mark introduced a ‘Dive Free’ promotion, offering certified divers free dives as part of a larger initiative to responsibly showcase the island’s underwater beauty.

Mark’s passion for conservation is evident through his involvement in efforts such as reefscaping, where 100 coral frames, known as Reef Stars, were added to the resort’s waters to support coral regeneration. He has also been a part of the team that saved a manta ray trapped in ghost nets, an experience that deepened his commitment to marine life preservation. To further support this, Mark launched a jewelry line with proceeds benefiting The Manta Trust for research on manta rays.

Another key achievement was the resort’s solar power expansion, which doubled the renewable energy generated by the resort. In 2023, corrosion-proof photovoltaic panels were installed on overwater villas, increasing solar capacity to 518.52 KWp. While some projects, like a wave energy initiative, were abandoned due to feasibility issues, Mark views these efforts as valuable learning experiences that may inspire future innovations.

Mark has also made strides in local talent development, with a goal of filling at least 40% of resort roles with Maldivians. He takes pride in mentoring and promoting local staff, exemplified by the recent promotion of Shahid Hussain, former Resort Manager, to General Manager at Noku Maldives.

Looking ahead, Mark remains focused on sustainability and guest experience. His leadership style, characterized by big ideas and a willingness to take risks, has led to continuous improvements at the resort. He credits the resort’s team and owners for their trust and collaboration, which has fueled his success in driving the resort’s progress over the past three years.
