Maldives named Worlds Leading Beach Destination at 26th World Travel Awards

The Maldives has been named World's Leading Beach Destination in the 2019 World Travel Awards (WTA) Grand Final Gala Ceremony held on 28th November 2019.

The elite of the travel industry gathered for the WTA at the landmark Royal Opera House in Omani capital, Muscat, to find out who among them had been crowned the best in the world.

Maldives surpassed all the destinations nominated for the Worlds Leading Beach Destination, including: Cancun and Riviera Maya in Mexico, Diani Beach in Kenya, Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, Mãncora in Peru, Maui in Hawaii (US), Miami Beach in Florida (US), Peloponnese in Greece, Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi (UAE), Santa Monica in California (US), The Algarve in Portugal, and Turks & Caicos Islands, Jamaica, Philippines and Thailand.

The island nation was nominated in six other categories as well which were, Worlds Leading Destination, Worlds Leading Dive Destination, Worlds Leading Honeymoon Destination, Worlds Leading Island Destination, Worlds Leading Tourist Board and Worlds Most Romantic Destination.

World Travel Awards celebrates its 26th anniversary year in 2019. Its annual programme is renowned as the most prestigious and comprehensive in the global industry. World Travel Awards gala ceremonies are regarded as milestone events in the industry calendar, attended by the industry's key decision makers and figure heads, as well as key trade and consumer media.

Some of the hospitality winners of the award ceremony included Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts (Worlds Leading Luxury Hotel Brand); Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Oman (Worlds Leading Palace Hotel); Tower Club at lebua (Worlds Leading All Suite Hotel); Fraser Hospitality (Worlds Leading Serviced Apartment Brand); Hotel de la Coupole MGallery by Sofitel, Vietnam (Worlds Leading Design Hotel); and InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, Vietnam (Worlds Leading Luxury Beach Resort).

Leading travel industry figureheads and decision-makers of the global travel industry attended what marked World Travel Awards inaugural ceremony in the beautiful sultanate of Oman

Graham Cooke, founder, World Travel Awards, said: "It has been an honour to bring World Travel Awards to Oman for the first time in our twenty-six-year history.

"What an incredible evening it has been here in the magnificent capital of Muscat.

Each year WTA covers the globe with a series of regional gala ceremonies staged to recognise and celebrate individual and collective successes within each key geographical region, and these regional winners then go on to compete in the grand final.

The World Travel Awards was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry, and are celebrating their 22nd anniversary this year.
