Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) promoted Sri Lanka among the Chinese travellers as a destination with a huge potential for attracting tourists with a wide diversity of Scenic locations and cultural heritage, at the China International Travel Mart (CITM) 2019.
The
Chinese travel market is one of the top 10 markets for Sri Lanka. China is a
market which consists of high spending tourists who are keen to have a travel
experience which is worth their expenditure, and Sri Lanka is one such
destination which caters to their holiday and travel requirements at all
times.
According to reports, during the first year of the new millennium, most of the overseas trips were made by Chinese residents, which was 10.5 million. By 2018, it increased to 149.7 million, an astounding increase of 1,326 per cent. In less than two decades China has grown into the world's most powerful outbound market, leapfrogging the US. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Chinese tourists overseas spent $ 277.3 billion in 2018, up from around $ 10 billion in the year 2000.
