Maldives Travel Awards: Peoples Edition 2018 Launched at One&Only Reethi Rah Resort

Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has officially launched the second edition of Maldives Travel Awards: Peoples Edition at a cocktail reception held for media and partners in One&Only Reethi Rah resort.


"It is my pleasure and privilege to be officially launching Maldives Travel Award: Peoples Edition," Said Mr Abdulla Ghiyas, president of MATATO.


"Our journey with the awards has been creating a platform to recognise and appreciate the hard work of unique resorts hotels, liveaboards and guesthouses in the Maldives. And last year we added the human component to recognise the stories of the people behind these brands, resorts, hotels and others."


The event oversaw the unveiling of an introductory video of the award by MATATO President Abdulla Ghiyas and a partnership agreement signed between MATATO and UNDP Maldives. The agreement was signed by MATATO President Ghiyas and UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Maldives Shoko Noda.




Under the partnership agreement, both organisations will join forces and work on several sustainable tourism initiatives, in addition to training programmes and awareness sessions which will be held on climate action and women empowerment amongst others.


According to MATATO, 05 individuals will be selected and awarded in this years Peoples Edition based on their contribution to the industry. Winners will be chosen by a panel of veterans, in sectors across the industry and the organisation believes that the recipients of this award will be a testament to the country, of the success of this industry. Winners of the Peoples Edition will be announced at the gala ceremony which will be held in October.


Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) is a non-profit organisation that has been working the last ten years to foster and promotes SMEs of local travel agents.


The association has engaged themselves in various activities over the years from advocacy, training, and workshops, travel trade fairs in many parts of the world, media FAM trips, government lobbying, recognition programs such as Awards, travel conferences and forums, publications, destination marketing, whistle-blower programs, representation and much more.
