Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa has earned the prestigious Green Globe Certification, reflecting its strong commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. This recognition highlights the resort’s ongoing efforts to harmonize with the stunning natural surroundings of Lhaviyani Atoll, while providing guests with experiences that encourage environmental awareness and responsibility.

The Green Globe certification program, a global leader in sustainability for the travel and tourism industry, evaluates organizations based on 44 criteria and over 380 compliance indicators. These rigorous standards ensure that certified properties uphold the highest international standards for social, economic, and environmental sustainability.

Incorporating eco-conscious practices into every aspect of its operations, the resort offers guests a variety of ways to engage with and contribute to the environment. Through its Marine Conservation Hub, visitors can participate in marine preservation activities, including the immersive ‘Marine Master’ program, which is part of Good Travel with Marriott Bonvoy. Led by the resort’s marine biologist, this program includes modules like Reef Explorer, Turtle Quest, and Build A Coral Reef, offering participants a hands-on opportunity to learn about the delicate ecosystems of the Maldives while directly supporting their conservation. Younger guests can also benefit from environmental education through the Kids Hub, which nurtures an early appreciation for nature.

A standout feature of the resort’s sustainability initiatives is its 430-square-meter hydroponic greenhouse, one of the largest in the Maldives. The greenhouse produces 30 kilograms of pesticide-free vegetables daily, using recycled rainwater and advanced farming methods. Guests can enjoy fresh produce at The Harvest Table or take part in the Family Foraging program, where sustainable culinary practices are combined with educational activities.

Energy efficiency is a central focus at the resort, with solar installations generating 548 kWp, reducing annual diesel consumption by 20%. Water conservation is also a priority, with initiatives like tap aerators and the recycling of wastewater for landscaping purposes, helping minimize the resort's environmental footprint.

The resort is also dedicated to protecting local ecosystems, including mangroves, native vegetation, and coral reefs. Its onsite bottling plant prevents the use of 225,000 plastic bottles each year, while eco-composting systems turn organic waste into nutrient-rich fertilizers, promoting a circular approach to resource management.

Thomas Schult, the General Manager of Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa, emphasized the significance of the Green Globe Certification as a testament to the resort’s dedication to sustainability. “By embedding eco-friendly practices into our guest experiences, we aim to inspire meaningful connections with the environment while safeguarding it for future generations,” he explained.

Located on the private island of Thilamaafushi in the Lhaviyani Atoll, Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa offers a serene retreat where timeless European elegance meets the natural beauty of the Maldives. With overwater and beach villas, diverse dining options, cultural immersion activities, and family-friendly programs, the resort seamlessly blends sustainability with luxury, providing an unforgettable escape that celebrates both the environment and enriching guest experiences.
