Recently, one of Maldives best luxury resort brands was bestowed with a number of prestigious awards depicting excellence in the works of training and development. One being the 50 Most Talented HR Leaders 2018 award which is an annual list of top 50 HR professionals in the Maldives published by HR Maldives.

A special attribute about the recent win was that two personnel members from the Adaaran luxury resort brand, Assistant General Manager for Talent Management & Quality Assurance, Mr. Tharaka Appuhamy and Assistant HR and Training Manager for Adaaran select Meedhupparu, Mr. Ahmed Anwar were recognized for their outstanding contribution to the company in the field of HR, for the second consecutive time.

The annual list recognizes the talent and contributory levels of players in the field of human resource and people strategy. The 50 Most Talented HR Leaders initiative by HR Maldives has been denoted as the first of its kind in the island nation, providing a notable list with profiles of the awardees where the primary objective of the listing is to distinguish and appreciate the work done by HR Professionals in the Maldives.

Another highlight that needs to be emphasized here is another award that was won by the Learning & Development Department of Adaaran Resorts, where recognition was given for their contribution in developing local talent in the Maldives for over 2 years. The department received the "Excellence in Learning & Development" award at the recent HR Maldives Awards 2018.

The department is dedicated towards uplifting the development of all associates who seek to join any of the Adaaran and Heritance resorts in the Maldives. The team strive to motivate individuals to not only hone their skills and work towards building a career in hospitality but also focus on shaping them into becoming confident employees who are able to realize their full potential.

Industry-based training and development has been a crucial part of the education system of the Adaaran resort chain, having been recognised for operating a hotel school in 2010 to educate and train young Maldivians. Other recognised programmes include the Adaaran Kurimagu Management Training program, Executive Development programme, Apprentice programmes in Front Office, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, and the Adaaran Cross Exposure programme to name a few.

Adaaran Resorts have so far incorporated a number of training instigations, among them being the Supervisory and leadership training  (SALT), part of the associate development program by the L&D team across all Adaaran properties. The idea behind the SALT programme is aimed towards promoting supervisor level competencies within local resort staff, and the Dhasvaaru Program which aims to train, develop and provide employment opportunities to young Maldivians who currently follow BTEC courses at local island schools.

Apart from that, Adaaran also runs the biggest local management training program "Adaaran Kurimagu", a one-year training programme conducted by the Corporate Learning & Development department of Adaaran in which young Maldivians receive training and are then absorbed into core operation teams of the resorts.

The programme, which goes as Adaaran Kurimagu is made up of a distinctive curriculum where by the end of the programme, graduates will be brought from their initial positions to the Executive or junior Executive level, whereby a succession plan will be created, giving them an express opportunity to become leaders of the industry in years to come. The one-year development course is a very comprehensive one covering 200 hours of theoretical inputs by industry experts and 2300 hours of hands on practical training in all the departments of resort operation.

Adding more insight into the current stance of this programme, Assistant General Manager for Talent Management & Quality Assurance, Mr. Tharaka Appuhamy disclosed that Adaaran is looking towards investing more into the company where the development process for another 10 batches of managers has been scheduled to be conducted by August 2019.

Adaaran Resorts is part of the Aitken Spence Hotels, a subsidiary of a Sri Lankan blue-chip conglomerate, Aitken Spence PLC. The Aitken Spence Hotels portfolio consists of 22 hotels, with ten hotels in Sri Lanka, one in India, seven in the Maldives and four in Oman. Adaaran & Heritance Resorts, which commenced its operations in the Maldives in 1993 has an inventory of 770 rooms with a new property opening Heritance Aarah in Raa Atoll.
