Maldivian Whale Shark conservationists participate at the 5th International Whale Shark Conference.

The four-day conference of the 5th International Whale Shark Conference (IWSC5) began on May 28 and concluded yesterday in the town of Exmouth in Australias Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area.

This is the fifth such conference held, following on from the successful IWSC4 held in Doha, Qatar in 2016. The core focus of IWSC5 brought together end users of science, such as tourism managers, marine park managers and conservation groups. The aim of the conference is to improve the uptake and application of research and help develop collaborations between research scientists and managers and the industry.

Mr.Ibrahim Shameel from Maldives presented the MPWhalesharks project yesterday along with preliminary results at the conference. The project is lead by PhD candidates Ms.Alina Wieczorek (NUI Galway) and Ms.Giulia Donati (ETH Zurich), funded by Save Our Seas Foundation in collaboration with Maldives Whale Shark Research Program.
