The Maldives tops the list of favourite honeymoon destinations for 2020, closely followed by Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Bali and Thailand, according to a new report from honeymoon specialist, Kuoni.

Other destinations on the up in the honeymoon bestsellers list include the Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, the USA and Italy.

Average honeymoon spend has gone up over the past three years with couples now investing an average of USD 10,039.74 on their dream trip, compared to just over USD 7,828.26 in 2017.

According to the Kuoni, the age of honeymooners has risen over the past decade, with more couples in their mid to late thirties tying the knot. They report that more couples in their 40s, 50s and 60s getting married for the second time have been booked compared to before.

The tour operator also stated that it is not unusual now for honeymoon bookings to include children, there has been a steady rise in honeymoon bookings which include either infants, toddlers or teenage children as couples start their family first or get married for the second time.

"Couples are increasingly pushing the boat out on their honeymoon with romantic experiences, with some of the most requested being a barbeque on a deserted island in the Maldives," stated in Kuonis report.

With 82% of honeymoons booked with the help of an expert in a store, very few couples book online preferring the expertise of a specialist during a personal consultation who can advise on the latest luxury resorts, multi-centre itineraries and upgrade options.
