SriLankan Airlines temporarily halts operations between Maldives and Colombo

SriLankan Airlines has announced temporary suspension of flights operating to and from Maldives with the closure of Colombo Airport due to the spread of COVID-19.

The flight suspension will effective for a week starting from 19th March 2020. 

The airline urges passengers with bookings for travel during this period to contact the following numbers:

Currently, Sri Lanka has banned all international flights arriving in the country starting from last Tuesday, 17th March 2020 in addition to closing off Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake till 31st March. This decision was made by President Gotabaya Rajapaksas office due to the emerging threat of the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Instructed by Sri Lanka health authorities, all international airports in Sri Lanka will be closed for operation of inward international commercial passenger flights (arrivals) effective from 0400hrs on 19 March 2020 (local time in Sri Lanka) until 2359hrs on 25 March 2020 (local time in Sri Lanka). This closure will be reviewed by the Sri Lanka authorities.

Amidst the restricted period, the following will be permitted:

  • Aircraft Departures with passengers originating from Colombo and transit passengers
  • Emergency Diversions to BIA
  • Freighter operations and humanitarian flights to BIA
  • Technical landings at BIA
  • Inbound ferry flights (without passengers) at BIA
