Four new airports to be opened in Maldives during the year 2020

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula has announced that four new airports are undergoing construction to be opened in 2020.

The four airports are are Haa Alif Hoarafushi, Shaviyani Funadhoo, Lhaviyani Madhivaru and Gaafu Dhaalu Maavarulu as informed by the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Hon. Aishath Nahula.

Shaviyani Funadhoo and Gaafu Dhaalu Maavarulu airports are set to open during the first 6 months of 2020, while Haa Alif Hoarafushi, and Lhaviyani Madhivaru airports are expected to start its service in the second quarter of 2020.

Currently, there are 14 airports providing its service in the Maldives. They are the international airports; Velaana International Airport, Hanimaadhoo International Airport, Gan International Airport, Villa International Airport, Maafaru International Airport, and the domestic airports; Baa Dharavandhoo, Raa Ifuru, Th Thimarafushi, Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo, Gaaf Alif Kooddoo, Gaaf Dhaal Kaadedhoo, Laamu Kadhdhoo, Haa Dhaal Kulhudhuhfushi, and Gn. Fuvahmulah airport.

A pledge was made by the previous government to establish airports within 20 minutes of each habited island. This pledge is being carried out by the current government as well.
