Shangri-La's Villingili Resort & Spa is the definition of luxury, a place where all experiences are tailored to suit passions of each guest.Fringed by coral reefs and blessed with white-sand beaches and towering forest, it's the archetypal tropical island escape. It's also an isle of superlatives, being home to the nation's southernmost resort and its highest point, five-metre "Mount Villingili".

From its over-water accommodations to the villas tucked secretively in the forest, the resort's major appeal is one of Swiss Family Robinson escapism albeit enhanced with first-rate facilities and ever-smiling service. Space at a premium elsewhere in the Maldives is unrestricted here, so it never feels crowded.

Accommodation comprises 132 luxurious villas, whose seven different styles span jungle retreats and beachfront hideaways to elevated, ocean-view tree houses. A choice of bars and restaurants all offer indoor/outdoor waterfront settings. Best of all is the sensational curries among Dr Ali's mix of eastern cuisines. Fashala also shines with its Mediterranean-inspired fine dining and local seafood. Javvu goes for world cuisines with both buffet and à la carte options; a breakfast of global offerings (including Maldivian) is served here. There's also 'Dine by Design' for intimate and memorable experiences à deux.

The airport on neighbouring Gan is an hour's flight from Malé (the main gateway) and five minutes by speedboat across the lagoon.
