The Maldives Airports company (MACL) hosted a ceremony on March 31, 2022 to award certificates to participants who completed the country's first aerodrome control training.

This is the first training conducted at the Velana International Airport's newly established aerodrome simulator. The training was attended by a total of eight staff members. The training was designed to meet the workforce requirements at Velana International and domestic and international airport towers in the Maldives. MACL manages all air traffic control towers at local and international airports.

The nine-week course was taught by internationally and nationally qualified instructors in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organization's criteria (ICAO). Additionally, the Maldives civil aviation authority (MCAA) has authorized the training.

Mr. Ibrahim Thoha, MACL's acting MD was the chief guest at the ceremony. In his address he emphasized the critical nature of air traffic control training and education. He also said with the introduction of ATC courses the company has saved millions of Ruffiya which would have otherwise be spent on trainings abroad and he specifically said even for this training close to half a million Rufiyya was saved.

Additionally, he stated that MACL is working to fulfill the training needs of all MACL departments. MACL's principal objective is to develop and train staff to accommodate new technologies and services.
