Maafaru Airport to open in May or June - Minister Nahula

Aishath Nahula, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, has estimated that airport developed at island of Noonu Atoll Maafaru is to be opened in either May or June this year.

While speaking on Public Service Medias (PSM) "Rajje Miadhu" program, she said that the development of Maafaru airport had faced some delays earlier for various reasons.

Minister Nahula mentioned that the delays took place before the transitional period of recent change in government, and said that these delays had led to various works that needed to be completed for it to not remain stalled.

The Minister also spoke of the ongoing project which is under the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, and said that company running the project had delegated the project to a sub company.

The Minister had taken the initiative to visit the United Arab Emirates very recently, in order to resolve the issues regarding this delay.

She spoke about this visit and said that it was to ultimately seek a solution to the delay, under consultation with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development as well. The minister also said that the government had wished to conduct meetings on whether or not to hand the contract over to another company, because of the delays.

In the end, Minister Nahula said that the company had requested to continue with the project as before.
