The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has recently launched a Reduce Plastic campaign at a special ceremony held at Velana International Airport (VIA).

The company's movement towards ending the consumption of single-use plastics was led by Deputy Chief Information Officer Moosa Solih who showcased cloth bags and glass bottles to be used in the airport.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Solih stated that VIA is well known across the Asian region for its ecological initiatives and active contribution to the global fight against pollution.

Hassan Areef, MACLs Associate General Manager, declared that the first goal of their Reduce Plastic campaign is to reduce the company's plastic footprint and called on all employees of MACL to work together so that the company may eliminate their contribution to issues of plastic pollution, by the end of the year.

MACL's new initiative comes during a surge of awareness about the dangers of plastic use and pollution in the public sector.

On Monday, the Presidents Office banned the use of single-use plastics, with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Foreign Affairs following suit shortly thereafter.
