Air India has recently launched flights between Mumbai and Frankfurt, putting an end to the Star Alliance members eight-year hiatus of serving the 6,564-kilometre sector. The carrier now offers four weekly flights between Mumbai and Frankfurt using its fleet of 787-8s.

Before Air Indias inaugural flight from Mumbai to Frankfurt left India, a celebratory event held where the Mumbai Airport presented an elaborate cake for passengers to enjoy at the gate before departure. The airlines return to the city pair was also celebrated with another brilliant cake baked by the German hub to commemorate the route opening.

Air India last flew between the two cities in October 2010 using 777-200s and 300s, offering a daily rotation. Along with the new connection between Mumbai and Europe, Air India has also initiated two new routes to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) recently.

The airline launched a three times weekly service to the Thai capital airport from Kolkata (CCU) on 16 October, while a four-time weekly rotation from Bengaluru (BLR) was introduced to the schedules the following day.

Air India was able to add these new routes after making some of the grounded aircraft operational by replacing engines and other components and re-working its network planning to enhance utilisation of planes.

Both flown using the carriers fleet of A320s, services on the 1,635-kilometre airport pair from Kolkata to Bangkok will go head-to-head with IndiGo, SpiceJet, Thai Airways, Bhutan Airlines and Druk Air, while the 2,488-kilometre sector from Bengaluru will face Thai Airways and IndiGo.

Air India is the flag carrier airline of India headquartered at New Delhi. It is owned by Air India Limited, a government-owned enterprise, and operates a fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft serving 94 domestic and international destinations.

Air India has a total of 120 planes which includes 73 narrow body aircraft and 47 wide-body aircraft. It is also expecting the delivery of six more A320 neos in the coming months.

The airline has its hub at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, alongside several focus cities across India. Air India became the 27th member of Star Alliance on 11 July 2014.
