Parliament has received a bill to impose new tax rates
for Business Class and Jet passengers departing from the Maldives via Velana
International Airport (VIA) starting from 2020.
The new tax fares imposed for the departures are USD 120
for Business Class and USD 240 for Jets. The proposed changes to the Maldives Airport
Departure Tax is expected to take effect in the upcoming year.
The new airport taxes are to be paid through four
categories, informs parliament member Mohamed Rasheed. The bill proposes to
relinquish the currently ongoing Airport Service Charge (ASC) by March of 2020
and to introduce a new departure tax starting from April 2020. Additionally,
the Airport Development Charge (ADC) will include four categories with higher tax
charges to take place from April 1 onwards.
Currently, ASC is levied on passengers departing from
the Maldives from an airport in the Maldives, at a rate of USD 25 per foreign
passenger and USD 12 per Maldivian passenger. Persons with diplomatic immunity,
transit passengers and children under the age of 2 are exempt from ASC.
