President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih personally attended and commenced the work at H.A Hoarafushi Airport in a special ceremony held during the peak hours of the day on the 31st March 2019.

Giving a speech at the ceremony, the president mentioned that he will do his very best to make sure the progress of the airport runs smoothly, and that the airport is finished as soon as possible.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Plc (MTCC) was officially handed the Hoarafushi Airport projects contract very recently, on the 25th of March, 2019. And Managing Director of MTCC, Hassan Shah says that the project will span up to 16 months.

In the past administration, the airport was to be built in H.A Maafinolhu, but after President Solih claimed his position, he changed the project to Hoarafushi because he believed that they should not be building such structures on naturally uninhabited islands.

Fortunately, even though the Maafinolhu Airport project was handed over in July to MTCC, Head of Projects at the company said that no work had been done on the land reclamation of the island.

Besides the Hoarafushi Airport project, MTCC also handles the work of three other airports Kulhudhufushi Airport, Funadhoo Airport and Maavaarulu Airport.
