The initiative, Coral Doctors, which was taken up by a
German couple in partnership with the German Oceanographic Museum Foundation,
has hosted a multitude of events of their coral propagation workshop series in
the Maldives; a country who relies heavily on the existence of coral reefs for
the country.
The team has already hosted their workshops in Ukulhas, Alif
Alif Atoll, Rasdhoo, Alif Alif Atoll and Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll. Priority
was given to locals, and more than 60 individuals were trained under the
project, which included dive professionals and students.
As per the Coral Doctors, the idea of the workshops came
into fruition with the thought of engaging the local communities, and educating
them on the fundamentals of coral reef ecology and how to effectively breed the
integral marine species.
The organizations things that it is very important for the native
people pf the Maldives to know how to handle living corals, learn different
techniques on coral reproduction and strategies for restoration before
conducting these activities on individual islands.
