Raa Atoll Fainu Airport Development Lease Honoured to Island Aviation Services

The Government of Maldives has given the lease of Fainu Island in Raa Atoll to Island Aviation Services Ltd (IAS) to construct and operate an airport on the island.


At the ceremony held in Ministry of Tourism, IAS Managing Director, Mr Abdul Haris said that the project would be completed in three phases. The first phase will include the construction of the runway and terminal buildings. Mr Haris further added that the project would be awarded to a contractor within a month.


Tourism Minister, Mr Moosa Zameer said that the entire project also includes the construction of two city hotels, a medical centre, a surgery recovery centre, a hangar, a training facility and lounges and eateries.


The financing required for the project is USD 8 million, and one of the largest tourism companies in the Maldives, the Universal Resorts is a partner in the project.


Island Aviation Services Limited established in 2000 is wholly owned by the Government of Maldives and is based in the capital Male.  The company's brand, Maldivian is the national airline of the country operates inter-island services within the county as well as international services to India, Bangladesh Thailand and China from its central hub at Velana International Airport.
