In 2024, the Maldives has witnessed a notable resurgence in Chinese tourism, with recent figures from the Ministry of Tourism indicating that 202,000 Chinese tourists have visited the island nation this year. This number constitutes 15% of the total tourist arrivals, underscoring the significant role China plays in the Maldives' tourism sector.

Overall, the Maldives has set an ambitious goal of welcoming two million tourists by the end of 2024. So far, the island nation has attracted 1.3 million visitors, leaving a target of an additional 700,000 tourists to reach by the year's end. Despite a 14% increase in tourist arrivals in August 2024 compared to the previous year, the first week of September saw a modest 3% decline from the same period in 2023, with an average of 3,900 arrivals per day.

In addition to Chinese tourists, other leading contributors to the Maldives' tourism include Russia, with 150,000 tourists; the United Kingdom, with 120,000 tourists; Italy, with 102,000 tourists; and Germany, with 97,000 tourists. The diverse influx from these countries highlights the Maldives' broad international appeal.

Efforts are also underway to enhance the Maldives' appeal to Indian travelers. The Indian market, which led in tourist numbers in 2023, has seen 83,000 Indian visitors so far in 2024. The Maldivian government is actively promoting the destination through targeted campaigns, aiming to position India among the top three sources of tourists by the end of the year.

The Maldives continues to captivate travelers globally with its stunning beaches, luxurious resorts, and renowned hospitality, maintaining its status as a favored destination for those seeking a tropical retreat.
