Japans Taisei awarded USD 570mn for Sri Lanka airport expansion

Japans Taisei Corporation has been awarded with over USD 500 million to expand Sri Lankas main airport in Katunayake, Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).

Under the project a new multi-level terminal building, two new piers and a link course will be built.

Enhancing the capacity of the airports passenger terminal is seen as an immediate and essential requirement as the number of air passengers handled by BIA is currently over capacity.

The contract related to the Package A of Step 2 of Stage II of the BIA project to Taisei Corporation is worth a sum of in Japanese Yen 41,553.89 million and in Sri Lankan Rupees 35.13 billion. 

The annual number of air passengers handled by BIA is estimated to reach 20 million by 2025.
