In a press release held recently, Tourism Minister Ali Waheed stated that a total of 1,484,276 tourists visited the Maldives in 2018. Compared to 2017, this is a 94,734 (6.8%) increase.
Ali Waheed also said that a majority of the tourists came from Europe, and that they made up 48.9% of the grand total.
Furthermore, the ministry has said that the most number of tourists came who came from one country was China, and the second market was Germany.
The fact that competitors of the destination tried to get tourists to change their mind about going to the Maldives, and the fact that the budget to promote the country - so that more tourists would come - was small in 2018, were all topics mentioned by many individuals.
However, with the new government, the budget to market tourism in the Maldives has been tripled in amount, meaning the new budget of 157 million has been approved.
Therefore, compared to previous years, more work will be put into promote tourism in the Maldives.
